Ludum Dare

Hey guys, hope you've all been well! Just got finished spending my weekend working on my game jam entry for Ludum Dare, where the goal is to make a game over just one weekend. I wanted to try something a little different so I convinced my roommate to help me make a horror game with absolutely zero visuals. I thought it would be a neat idea to attempt to make a game that was entirely communicated to you through audio. It's pretty rough around the edges, of course, but I'm actually pretty proud of it. Feel free to download it and check it out:  http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=52179 (I apologize for the corny voice acting, but we couldn't use text so we had no choice :P)

I wasn't the only one competing in the jam, though! Vanilly and S worked with a couple of their friends (Zeta and Plumegeist) to make this seriously beautiful 2D platformer:

You can check their game out here: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=50315

    2. I am upset that he did it while pocketing our money. He promised to make ONE game and one game ONLY with the funds that WE are giving him via patreon, then he turns around and does this nonsense.

We have every right to be upset. Go be a brainless apologist troll somewhere else.

    3. As below, Anon 05~223916, and as everywhere you've posted here... you should really get your facts straight before trying to kick up a fuss. For starters 'Full-Time' does not in any way equal 'A promise to do nothing else with their life at all ever', nor will it ever.

As always, also, you aren't paying him to make a game for you. He's making a game he wants to make, and you are choosing to support him monetarily in that effort. These are two very, very different things.

BS is full of bugs, unfinished and missing content, bad code operationalization so animations/game lags hard compared to pre-system/visual reworked one from 7-8 months ago, and lots of other crap and...

suddenly Harista jumps out with totally odd game that's not even related to BS.. Wasting time, patrons money and resources hard I see. scumbag being scumbag

10/10 I don't regret canceling patreon support as soon as that game rework bullshit started in 2014.

    1. When I purchased the Breeding Season Team, I expected them to devote their lives to Breeding Season and forswear all other activities. I cannot fathom where they get the idea that I will accept them spending a weekend creating free games that I did not order them to make. It is an outrage!

    2. when people pay their shekels for BS team then they expect them to work on stuff they got paid not some not related project... during those 2 days they could add something new to game or fix shitload of bugged or missing content or fix the damn lagging of whole game: I prefer to buy new PC for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt not for Breeding Season...

      Delete
    3. I did the same. After months of development of a flash game, still unplayable, bugged, some new Paint made backgrounds, same animation sprites but used differently - hard work, keep the money coming.

Unbelievable that people still think it's real. There are plenty of real hentai companies, milky lilith pixy etc, to support who made great products , instead of making a crook rich.

    7. I'd really appreciate it if people would stop thinking they have some sort of right to demand and order, and generally treat H and the other BS creators like something between a possession and an employee. They are neither.

Most of the complaints here, as below, are about the assumption that 'on clock' time was spent to work on this challenge (which is a long-running challenge project for game creators to create something fresh and fast, in a time limited frame, and to share what they come up with with other artists and creators). Treating the creators like owned work-slaves aside... it wasn't. It was done on the weekend.

You know what else he might have done on the weekend? Spent time with family, relaxed, gone fishing, gone to the beach, played some other video games, attending a philosophy conference or slept. Would any of you have cared if he'd spent the weekend doing any of those things? no. Because it's his weekend, and those are usually taken off anyway. So why are people suddenly complaining when he uses that free time to enter a game-creator's challenge and produce something else free for people to look at, if they're interested? It's the most disgusting form of childishness to be given a free present, un-looked for, and to complain about it because it doesn't interest you.

  5. It's Ludum Dare, guys, and anyone who gets shirty at a creator for pausing their other activities to participate in the challenge, is being pretty staggeringly idiotic. Calm your collective anatomical bits and pieces.

While I don't have the time to check either yours or Vanilly-and-Co.'s LD entries out, good on you both for getting in on having a go at it this time around, HB.

    3. @Erica, @FOF: The problem you two brainless apologists are willfully overlooking is that Harista is STILL GETTING PAID OUR MONEY while he does this nonsense side-project crap. He's wasting development time that we are funding on games that we don't care about and don't want to support.

That's called fraud, and we have every right to be upset about it. If you took your car in to the mechanic to get it fixed, and find out that half-way into the repairs the mechanic decided to spend two hours making a paper-mache dog and STILL BILLED YOU FOR THE TIME you would be understandably and justifiably upset about it.

      Delete
    4. Anon, you still get to keep the paper-mache dog, and due to the fact we're paying for H's time, you make it seem it's our job to get mad if the man takes time to sleep. Sometimes dicking around on side projects increases the productivity on the main.

      Delete
    5. Nope anon, we're giving money as free patronage to support an artist's abilities to create while keeping themselves in a comfortable manner.

Take your mechanic example: when I gave my car in, the mechanic would tell me when it would be ready. I drop it in on a Friday morning, and he mentions that it'll probably take two days to get everything done and replaced, so I should pick it up on Tuesday; there's this auto-specialist convention on over the weekend and he intends to attend it, and see what other mechanics are doing, and compare some of his handiwork to theirs.

No. I'm not upset.... and anyone who IS upset by that, is being an indescribable douche.

For those who are annoyed that the team isn't working on BS every day need to do some research into how productivity goes down after 40+ hours per week.
All that said, with the amount of money being pumped into this game I hope you guys are all working at least 35 a week. I've worked on enough games to know how long it can take to add even minor features but some of these monthly updates are looking a little thin.

  10. For those seriously butthurt about the break from BS in order to work on a DIFFERENT game:
    1) Why is everyone on H-Bomb's ass but not saying shit about S or Vanilly doing the same thing?
    2) Writers do the same damn thing, guys. We get stuck. We get in a rut. We need to branch out in to something new in order to recharge. I might take a break from my cyberpunk comic I'm working on in order to world build a high fantasy world for a weekend. It opens up new doors and come Monday I'm excited to get back to work on the comic. It allows the mind to wander a bit while stretching out wings. Also, it's a cool way to get more players here; more publicity. All artists do this: actors taking on bit-parts, directors doing a stupid webisode, writers switching genres for a short story, illustrators creating amusing fanart, etc.

So take a chill pill, kays?

    1. There is a very, very key point you're missing here, stupid: HE IS BEING PAID FULL-TIME BY PATRON MONEY TO WORK ON BREEDING SEASON -ONLY-.

And then he takes a WEEK of development time, that could and should have been used on Breeding Season, and wastes it on this stupid one-off P.O.S. garbage "horror" game for a stupid contest that doesn't even matter......ALL WHILE CONTINUING TO POCKET PATREON MONEY.

I would not have a single issue with him working on side projects, if he weren't getting paid. The thing about your naive example about writers block and so on, is that they don't do it ON THE CLOCK. That's all side-project, in-my-spare-time sorts of things. Harista, however, did this all on the clock. He did it all while still pocketing donor money. He has basically outright LIED to all of us. All you have to do is go and look at the patreon page for Breeding Season where he says if people donate X amount of money per month he'll promise to work on Breeding Season FULL TIME. He's now making far in excess of that goal, and he still goes and does stupid crap like this wasting an entire week of development time on that nonsense!

If you think we don't have a right to be upset about this, then you're out of your goddamn mind!

    2. Buddy chill out, this was my weekend. I spent exactly two days making that game. I did it for fun. I made the game primarily as a chance to spend time with one of my best friends who wanted to be part of making a game but hasn't had the chance to before. I wasn't "on the clock", if I hadn't been doing that I would've been spending time with people I cared about doing other fun things instead, not working; I already work 40 hours a week, and even more than that close to releases. That's not even like an arguable fact: I stream on a regular schedule. You can literally watch me do it. Even if you only believed I ever worked when I was actually on stream (we all do quite a bit of off-stream work too, between administrative things and the stuff I literally can't stream), that amounts to around 30 hours a week that you can straight up stare over my shoulder while I work.

I understand that you care very deeply about the game, and I genuinely appreciate that you do, but you need to calm down.

      Delete
    3. Wow really?!! I'm not upset about it. Wasn't there a thing where no one could post a comment as anon anymore? On a side note, can we be able to play the new version in the in game browser instead of only through download? It's impossible for me to, I use a tablet so....

      Delete
    4. I'll have the browser link stuff all fixed up by next release, I know that's been a PITA for some people.

      Delete
    5. Anon 4:25: That wonderful breed of internet childishness that believes posting stuff in all caps makes their complaints bear more sense or intelligibility. In this case, it's false claims, like stating that we're giving money in a way that obliges H to work on BS and nothing else... utterly false... claiming it took a week of dev time, when it was done over the weekend.... casting aspersions on the value of artistic sharing and challenge activities, such as LD, as though their arbitrary opinion about it is some sort of objective fact....

Then we've got equating working on a hobby project on the weekend with lying to patron; now that one is hilarious, as well as further reiterations of the complaint about it using a week of 'on-clock' time.

All in all, I think that if the posting Anon actually believes themselves to be a rational individual that was upset for properly founded and sensible reasons, that -they- owe it to the -creator-, at this point, to post back here and acknowledge that, given their assumptions about what time was used to produce this were false, and that it was done as a hobby project, in what would normally be the creator's free time anyway, that they are not, in fact, upset at all about this issue.

I wonder if they will? In these situations it's usually far more likely that they simply won't respond at all, or will answer back trying to make their argument again, using the same, already refuted points. I'm personally curious to see.

I never read so much bullshit of a braindead hypocrit. I pay and I don't feel cheated. Updates are coming frequently and the team is listening to critism and stays in touch with the community. When all you have to do is to complain about some stupid nonsense you sound like a spoilt little brat. Here's the thing, we donate and that's completely voluntary. If you feel cheated just stop paying and play it for free when it's finished. Whatever you do, just please stop trolling...

  11. I don't understand why people are getting so mad about the creator taking a weekend to do something fun. It's their downtime they can do what they want with it. Through Patreon we support Breeding Season, we choose to support them. They aren't obliged to put every waking moment into the game if they need a break. Seriously. I think a change in their environment is good. It's good for creativity, for moral, and for their own health. If they wanted to they could scrap Breeding Season, shut down the Patreon and say 'screw you' to all of us. But they don't, they're continuously putting up with the crap that comes from part of this community to work on a game they developed and chose to share.

People who choose to complain, go unplug your Patreon and shut up, or just shut up and let them work on what they want to. You chose to support them, you aren't their boss. There's a big difference.

  12. After reading over most of these comments very thoroughly, I can understand both why there are some white knighters willing to forgive the BS Team, and why there are so many who are upset about it.

So H-Bomb took the weekend to make a whole, functioning game to be entered into a contest. Yes, it was his free time, as he does work on ideas for BS at least 40 hours a week with, as he said, about 30 hours of that being streamed. So claims of fraud are faulty.
However, I think it's a big fuck you, shit right in your face to the people here who have donated and hoped and suggested things for this game for so long only to have shittier and shittier versions of the game come out with more and more bugs, less and less functioning game play, and fewer and fewer animations. (Plus, hey, not that it had one before, but where'd that story go??)

People have been behind you on this for a long ass time, and you've spit in their faces over and over again. You've said before, if anything ever happened, you had enough money saved back to FINISH THE GAME in just a couple of months. You've made it so that any negative feedback is removed, even though the ONLY way to improve is to listen with an open mind to criticism from the FANBASE that wants to GIVE YOU THEIR MONEY.
And now you post up that you have completed a game over the course of a weekend.

    Congrats.
    Glad you had fun.

Now you can go back to shoveling shit around, moving and replacing things that don't fucking matter, and doing everything in your power to tinker around with a game you're pulling in nearly 30k A MONTH for, without actually finishing it.

    GG HBomb.

But seriously, it seems to me like he does listen and is quite good-natured about it. We "white knights" are the ones who maybe get a little spittle-flecked. On the other hand, it's like being at a friend's party, drinking a pint of something and always having someone coming along and telling you how the beer is shit and the whole party is a scam. Bound to have a row after that, even if it isn't the beer isn't the best.

    3. I don't care what they do with their spare time but I do agree with the original post to a certain degree. The amount of content added from the last update was next to nothing. The things added were completely pointless (scrollable farm, affection, happiness). These things can be added when they actually have content to back it up. Adding meaningless placeholders is not an update. How about just add one thing (that actually matters) at a time?

      Delete
    4. Ironically, I've been favorably impressed with Hbomb's recent updates, after getting a little worried earlier this year. I think he's on the right track, getting all the pieces in first and balancing them later. The reason is that if you get some pieces in first and then try to add more dynamics later, it becomes easy to break what was already implemented. This is particularly true if one is trying to make save files portable. If we don't see any progress toward balancing by the end of May then maybe we should return to this, but for now I think it's premature to expect it. I also think that balanced game mechanics will take months to get right.

I also want to register that I haven't felt even a single drop of effluvia hit me in the face since I started supporting Hbomb a a year and some ago. Perhaps he has poor aim.

    5. Tsunami - I didn't say that he made the small game on the clock. I said that it's shameful he could complete an entire game in a weekend and not make a working copy of BS when he dedicates so much time to it during the rest of the week. I think more than anything you just really misunderstood the entirety of my post.

FOF - Because I remember reading the negative feedback before his post about supposed "trolls", when he decided to preen the comments. I've been coming here long enough to have read it first hand. And I'm sorry, but saying you're a dissatisfied customer is not trolling. Nor is pointing out what's broken or asking why it's not fixed.

JYS - I would love to see him/them tackle things one at a time as you say. I think it would be wonderful for them to have a complete, working game before adding new characters or even just updating their designs.

NP - Very fair points, and I appreciate the humor. :)

On the other side, i can also understand the people who are upset. You can complain about bugs, code optimization, gameplay/mechanic choices, even about stylistic changes OR HB's behavior that actually has something to do with BS (like remoying anyonimus comments)...but this..just no.

That said, some art does show "fat" things - like the extra thick legs on catgirls (just look at the catgirl in the maid outfit or the fem breeder X catgril drawing - the hips/legs are MASSIVE)
Also, why are the catgirls claws always out? Seriously. That's not a good things while having sex, and it's not necessary to identify her as a catgirl.

      Delete
  19. I think a majority of people aren't completely sure why they're so angry with breeding season and breeding season isn't sure why it has so many trolls. The answer is simple, the game is all content and no story to create immersion. People are taking for granted all the details of the game such as the extensive details in hair skin tone facial features and the determinating factors that decide what is passed down from who. But the biggest thing is with everyone shying away from what they don't approve of, everyone is only playing with half the content max. Right now the only motivation players have is debt, once you become established enough making your payments aren't that much of a struggle, especially for players who don't have a problem using any sexual means to quickly achieve their goals. The game could use a rival breeder to challenge the player and since you have a male and female breeder pull a pkmn move and use the unchoosen character as the rival with maybe a slight alteration so fans can get their breeder on breeder fantasy without the insest. Challenges like fares and pageants could create reason to build ideal monsters and even have favorites and the added value trait could be done away with and to get more value on monsters the have to have ribbons

  20. About the cat girl claws i have mixed feelings, yeah in some situations they aren't ideal but for those of use who don't hate words know that monsters are tools of destruction with the fatel flaw of reflecting our desires, so rather than trying to kill monsters we decided to want to sleep with them so we'd stop getting our a$$'s handed back to us. So cat girls don't really need retractable claws because they came from the void to kill not give hand jobs :p
