Hey guys, just checking in. I've been working on the new items/consumables along with the new save system, and they're both coming along nicely. I've redesigned the way items work to be far more extensible so that we can have a lot of new kinds of items in the future: instead of just consumables that you can sell or feed to your monsters, you'll also be able to obtain things like equipment that will have persistent effects on a monster or crafting materials that can be used to make better items or for cooking. Items will also be stackable in your inventory, which should make them much easier to manage (as consumables will work a bit differently and have discrete quality levels, not every single consumable will be unique like in 5.3).
As for the save system, I'm attempting to make it so that you can choose a specific folder on your computer that you'd like to use for your save file (instead of Flash just handling it automatically). Hopefully that'll do a lot to help alleviate the issues with saves being finicky and easy to lose. Also, you'll be able to have multiple save slots in the new version.
I'm looking to release the next game update in about a week or two; I'll keep you all updated.

And you apparently don't understand how development works. It may seem "half assed" in the sense that it is lacking options, but implementing the actual features is necessary. Most of your list aren't new features, they are new options. It is counter productive to add new options to the game before you have all the new features implemented. It is far more important to work up from a functional and basic platform than to work down from a laundry list/patchwork of features that are mostly complete, half-complete, and barely implemented. Not only is it extremely difficult to add actual new features if you added a ton more options, such as a completely different consumable system or an invetory and equipment system, it would also cause a significat number of problems in the end result and require even *more* time to fix.
DeleteThe only thing that H-Bomb should be taking to heart is the trap that many developers fall into, where they try to implement too much. You can always add more, after all, and it quickly spirals out of control. For a small developer, it can just end up overwhelming them and the game can enter into development hell very quickly. As a note, I don't think he's gone there. He has obviously, to anyone who knows anything about anything, been making progress. But I do hope he has a list of what features he wants to implement, and keeps it at that pretty tightly.
After the basis for the game is implemented, as well, new content and options should be able to flood the gates on a regular basis. Implementing new animations, NPCs, Quests, etc is relatively simple compared to writing the code for the entire game. But you need to at least have a functional base before you can do any of that.
Right now we are in the least interesting part of development, and nothing he could reasonably give you would pique anyone's interest, regardless of how important said updates would be. They are easily more important than any of the optional updates people keep requesting.
So don't put the cart before the horse here. What is being done needs to be done, and it pretty much needs to be done the way it currently is done.
Don't get your panties in a twist, the wall of text isn't necessary either. So many words to say so little, so I'll just answer you in two sentences: 1- To answer your initial question: Hell no, multiple save slots aren't even within the top 20 priority list, even the need for saving at all is doubted because the most basic events like money and debt collection aren't even there. 2- I'll ignore that you contradicted yourself while naming what's essential to the game and which isn't, but I'll just summarize it by asking a question about your last line on "What is being done..."

ReplyDeletePLEASE, PLEASE, listen to yourself and stop making date and "I'll have it done by x!" estimations. I know it's a bit rough to rag on you when you haven't even released/not released anything yet, but just consider taking ten minutes to form an alternative way of giving players an estimation of the next release, instead of a footnote of a date or length of time that will inevitably either be missed or last minute and inevitable lead to a huge backlash of comments about it.
Everything else looks interesting (I question focusing on complicating consumables and a save system when you've yet to release a stable build but, whatever.), but please, work out some way to keep fans up to date with what is happening and what is planned that isn't infrequent blog updates and broken promises.
H, before you'll decide to release a new build, make sure to qc it at least twice (there are often some problems that need to be hotfixed almost immediately, that's not good at all). That said, did you thought about recruiting a QC on a regular basis?

So, you have a certain amount of work that has to be put into the next major version of the game, there is no time-stamp on when that release happens, but when it does it is then, and only then, that your patreons give their subscription payment?

ReplyDeleteEveryone seems to be complaining about the "Deadline", but all I see is that hes saying "I think i will have the save and consumables to at least a demoable level in a week or 2." There was no "the game is working" or "it'll be out this day". Its a progress update, and its useful. If he were to put out in a week saying "this snowballed, and it'll take another week or 2", then no real deadline was missed. Would people be any happier about it if he were to explicitly state it this way?

Here is an idea for a random event!!
ReplyDeleteYour monsters rebel and capture you for one day. All monsters that were involved breed with the player (regular chances of new monsters) . You lose the day and can't do any actions. You can use a consumable item to stop the event from happening.
I was thinking it could only be one stable/pen that would rebel. Like all the holstaurus or all the stallions. Depending what is going on at the time in your game this could end up being kind of a negative or positive event. On the negative side you could end up losing a day, so if you had a request that was due you would miss it. On the positive side you would have a chance for every monster in that stable/pen to produce a new monster.
Of course the absolute best part about this event would be that we get a forced player monster gangbang animation out of the deal.
I won't lie; I'd find that pretty hot, but I think Hbomb and crew are steering clear of anything too rapey. Maybe they'll have a toggle for it someday, but for now I think it's WAY more important to make sure everyone feels relatively comfortable with the tone of the game than to feed that particular fantasy. I'll be completely okay if it never happens.

Take a look at the older releases. Have you seen harvesting a buttstalion? Breeder harvested it and when the bucket was full she was turning her back to monster. What next? Whoa! Rape! I don't remember people complaining about that, do you?
Did you try to read the story at the begining of the game? If i remember well, monsters live among people because guild master haven't decided to lead her own army to battle. Instead she walked against monster army and let all those monsters rape her. Why don't you complain about game background that's already implemented?

Count me as one of the people who has kinda-sorta "rape" fantasies where the sex is forced but enjoyable rather than horrible. Animals have sex if they can and its not really degrading in the same way if a breeder gets sort of "accidentally raped" inside my porn brain. Even knowing it's in the game would not be pleasant for me and probably make me feel much less inclined to support the game. There is a way to connect both consensual sex and rape fantasy, but I don't think that it should take place in BS.
Despite being someone who gets off on rape fantasies if they're presented the right way, I have to say that it makes me a little proud to be part of a community that draws a line at rape. BS in that past has skirted the edges but never got into the places where I got uncomfortable, but even if they pulled back the line a little to rule out some of the stuff I liked, I'd much rather they do that than push it out to where it ruins the game for a bunch of people. Besides, as other posters have said, there's tons of rape porn out there to whatever extremity you desire. BS doesn't need to cover that niche.
DeleteOn a related note, lots of stuff gets called 'rape' in the context of erotic fantasy that really isn't rape. If you sell yourself into sex slavery for kicks on the idea that you'll get 'raped', that's basically power transfer role-play taken to an extreme. Presumably the breeder takes on his or her task out of some of the same reasoning despite knowing these are all *sex* monsters. When getting caught unawares by one of those monsters, it's kind of like the annoyance of having a pet wake you up in the morning because it's hungry. If it was a human doing it, it would be rude and intrusive in the case of breakfast, or truly despicable in the case of rape, but since it's an animal, it just comes with the territory. The addition of elves complicates that, hence the somewhat different treatment in the BS story.

I totally agree with your post : lots of the "rape" mentioned or implied in BS seems actually like a consensual rape scenario or bdsm - the elves selling themselves being a good example, since it's a fetish for them and they get off to it/agree to do it to themselves, so it's consensual.

Breeder always seemed to me like one of those silent, but pervy types - she knew the "risks" beforehand and didn't mind them + different culture, less tabooish about whole sex thing makes her behaviour normal. Lack of humanisation helps them too, if some of events currently implemented were with NPCs, people would be more vocal.
For now, iirc, the only rapey thing was Kay story about mermaid consumable; that one grossed me out.

We commenting on this idea (saying that we find rape terrible and don't want events with it).
So if we removed the forced part and just went with consensual orgy/gangbang, players would be more accepting? That actually sounds more appealing. Either way lets come up with more ideas for the devs.
DeleteKind of a random speculation, but I suspect the reason some people (like me!) enjoy some rape fantasies is that they sort of give you license to indulge in your sexual side without having to make any decisions. This only works if what's being forced on you something you sort of want to do already, but aren't doing because of unsexy practical concerns. I think that's part of the problem with rape by the fully-sapient: as soon as I know someone is the sort of person who would knowingly rape someone, I definitely don't want to have sex with them any more, which ruins the fantasy. "Accidental rape" by a hot guy/girl/futa, on the other hand, is kind of my favorite thing.

I'm personally more interested when characters are experimenting with their own free will (or better yet, their are fully aware of their own sexuality), which is kinda rare.
It's psychological thing - when something you want is taboo in reality, you feel ashamed that you want it, so rape fantasy is the answer - I didn't initiated it, they forced me to do it, I didn't have a choice so I have no reason to be ashamed because of it. It slowly disappears, as society becomes less tabooish about sex and more equal.
I think that it could easily works in RP rape fantasy or in (good) BDSM - protagonist always can use safeword to stop it and s/he doesn't do it because it's enjoyable (unless it's bad one, then it's imho rape).

Anon 12:12 here again. I confused you because, as you note, I was actually talking about multiple different scenarios without clarifying. One is the "accidental rape" of a creature that has no concept of consent and another is the more elaborate (and probably even less plausible!) fantasies in which misunderstandings lead to sex I didn't consent to. Its kind of "I love the idea of being 'raped', as long as it's not by a rapist." I don't really know how common that is.

That fits my experience, but YMMV. I'm finding it funny how quick people are trying to shut down a very reasonable addition to the content. Although it is completely understandable for people to get upset if the scene was "forced". DeleteI don't think it's silly at all. Some rape porn (IMO) is super hot and some is just dripping with misogyny, and that is super not-hot. In fact, it's so not-hot that I can see why it would make people shy away from supporting the game even if we don't have to see it.
DeleteFortunately the team is diverse enough to where I think they can hand around ideas and check to make sure any scenarios aren't crossing the line, or fixing them if they are.
Or they'll just not do any scenes that are rapey at all. I think they could do it without being bad, but there's plent of other sexy content in the game, it doesn't need it. As I said before, I think some rape porn is super hot, but I dont *need* it to enjoy the game.
Misogyny, misandry, hell it can be whatever you want it to be, but that's not the point. Context matters, sure, but it is just fantasy after all. I also agree that h-bomb can choose not to want it in the game. The truly insufferable part, however, is when people choose to play the child and yell "mommy there's a monster under the bed" instead of being a rational adult.

Every bit of art I've seen so far involves harpy getting eaten out or getting eaten out while giving a footjob with its crusty bird talons, better than a regular footjob imo but still. The only penetration I've seen with a harpy was futa-harpy on catgirl. We don't just need more harpy scenes, we need harpy scenes with penetration, and giant dragonesses.

Does anyone know we're going to get in the next upgrade? I mean, here post H-Bomb says we're going to get a new items system and a new, fixed working system, but are we getting (in the next upgrade) the animations that S-purple and Vanilly previewed in the last posts?
ReplyDeleteVery much doubt that. If we are lucky, we might get a couple of catgirl animations or dickwolf animations, since they are the first on that ladder "system" vanilly talked about. But who knows :)

I don't really know how coders supposed to post their progress - screencaps full of code isn't what most porn fans want to see daily.
Most of the time, more people in project =/= faster updates, but = better quality. Speaking from experience here.

Jake Kaufman talked on this blog with few folks using his official account. So only other option is hacking his account (and I don't believe H-bomb has abilities to do that unnoticed) or that JK is scammer.

Can anyone post a tutorial? I used to get the concept of "look for what stats are + and breed out the -" but I'm baffled by the letters and dashes and am not sure how to tell which creature improves what stats in its partners.
ReplyDeleteNow, it only works with a linear xp system. A monster with say charisma - will not gain any charisma upon leveling while a monster with an ¨a¨ charisma will get a ton of it. If I remember correctly, a monster with high str will give more exp to its partner

If you folks really think that the current state of affairs is okay, then you have a very, very low threshold for quality expectations. especially for everything that is involved with this project. But maybe that's just because we live in the derping times? People can just take the money, deliver something sub-par and don't even have to take responsibility for it? Just saying. Why even make an effort?
This week or next week that sums it up no time or date was giving so just check in and out every so often.
DeleteLook, I'm the one up above with the exceedingly long post defending HB's decision making process of what to focus on and when to do so. I still think focusing on the coding is vastly more important in the long run than any other matter. The game needs to at least have a functional framework behind the scenes before you can really start implementing anything of value.
DeleteEqually, I do think people are being rather unfair towards him about things that are difficult, or impossible, to control. You don't just snap your fingers and have perfect code out of nowhere. It doesn't work like that. Sometimes coding takes excruciatingly long to do seemingly minor things. Sometimes something doesn't work, and it can be damn near impossible to figure out. This all takes a significant amount of time.
Further, not having a the project manager filled is uncontrollable; you don't just say "I want someone to do it" and suddenly you have someone hired on. Finding a worthwhile candidate who can perform the necessary tasks takes a significant amount of time. Similar jobs can take months, or even years, to fill in professional settings.
*THAT ALL SAID*, the one thing that can be accounted for is updates on progress, however "slim" they may be. A daily update, with just a basic set of "what I did today" would take about 10 minutes at the end of the day. A weekly progress update would take a half hour to an hour. It doesn't need to include anything worthwhile, rather just an assurance to donators that progress is proceeding. If all it is includes "Working on menu system codes", and "fixing code for menus" it at least gives insight into what the hell is going on. The current rate, however, gives nothing but a lack of faith that anything is happening. It is rather unforgivable.
Once again, a far more significant number of people want to know what is going on than those who want random content X to be included NOW! Most just want an idea of what the fuck is going on, regardless of how uninteresting it would.
