As of right now most of the fundamental code for the UI system, monsters, locations, and ranch buildings is in place, but some fairly large aspects of the game are still missing: each of the individual UI menus and components still need to be rewritten to work with the new UI manager, the system for retrieving and customizing animations needs to be put together, the new game events system needs to be put together, as well as the new requests system, and then finally each class that needs to be saved will need to have serialization methods added to them. I'm expecting that each of these are going to take about a day.
From now on I'm going to make a blog update every single day that I work detailing the progress. Some days the post will be short, but generally I just want to give a constant sense of how the project is advancing. If I run into any significant issues, I'll try to put them in detail on the blog so that any programming savvy commenters can offer suggestions. As soon as the build is working correctly I'll release it immediately. I'll go ahead and put up the public release tomorrow.
As far as the project manager position: more accurately I'm looking for someone who has experience in software development and architecture as well coordinating a small group of workers. Prior experience with Flash or AS3 is a plus but not necessary. Knowledge of good OOP design is ideal, as well as familiarity with some sort of project management software. If you're interested go ahead and e-mail a resume to me over at HartistaPipebomb@gmail.com.

Sounds good too me man. Keep the updates coming and I'm happy.
ReplyDeleteAs long as you do get an update out within a week here and just a bit over a month next time than it is fine.
ReplyDelete"From now on I'm going to make a blog update every single day that I work detailing the progress."
ReplyDeleteTHIS is the shit I was hoping to hear. Here's hoping regular updates become a thing. Seriously, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that any update is fine, so long as there IS one. Hell, I'd prefer a half-dozen tiny updates of a couple animations or even just bug fixes than a single, monthly update with a whole buncha stuff.
I appreciate the effort you're putting in to solve this problem, and I hope that you're able to find a definite solution to both the game bugs and the issues the fanbase has.
Still, I wish you'd address some other concerns - like people pointing out that you may want to quit adding a whole bunch of new features and monsters to the game instead of focusing on finishing up and fixing what's already there. IIRC futa is still not completely properly implemented, nor is neoteny, hell, Albino still isn't even a trait option anymore. Feral's not even my thing but it was an integral part of the old game - what's happening with that? I've seen a couple artworks on S-Purple's tumblr, but that's it.
NPCs have implications of future scenes (Kala, for example) that lead to nothing so far, and I'd much rather see stuff like NPC relationships get worked on than the introduction of - what was it? Relationships with monsters and consumable preferences? Those things seem like relatively small potatoes compared to major gaps in animations of currently available pairings among existing monsters. The list of priorities seem to be a little skewed - I get that the new stuff is cool and will improve gameplay and all, but seeing as no one really /asked/ for it...
Also, a polling system as well as a proper forum has still yet to be introduced, despite pretty obvious demand for it - I'd rather you put someone on that than a project manager (though maybe the position could be combined?) Hell, make the forum patreon only, so you can pay special attention to actual donators and their suggestions for the game. Lord knows the $1 tier needs some more incentive.
Sorry to critique you so much when you're obviously still a bit off balance, but these things have been bugging me for a while, even before the whole 'dead silence for a month' thing. Good luck dealing with the ongoing shit storm and coding, though.
Daily is probably overdoing it, but, well, current circumstances given it's probably better to be on the overcautious side ;)
ReplyDelete"From now on I'm going to make a blog update every single day that I work detailing the progress."
ReplyDeleteThis I think is pretty dangerous.
1. This will end up sucking WAY too much of your time. Time I think should be spent on the game or on your own free time. It's going to cut into one or the other and you need to have a life aside from making the game.
2. The way this is phrased means that if you go for 3 or 4 days without a post (you're sick, you went to visit your parents for the weekend, etc..) people are going to start saying that you've taken the money and run.
3. Ultimately it's way too granular to mean anything to anyone. "Today I scoured 5000 lines of code looking for 1 error".
4. Too frequent updates will burn you out and most people won't read them all.
My suggestion? Commit to an update every Friday (then take the weekend off). This gives everyone a date to look forward to. It gives you enough time to accomplish something worth talking about. If you do something amazing in the middle of the week you can still post about it then, but if you commit to once a week it keeps everyone engaged. You included.
This update was great. It told us what was happening. Didn't commit to anything that you might have to break later. It shared your difficulties in a well written way without sounding like you are making excuses. Keep up the good work (and the updates).
Oh and never, ever promise that x update will be released on x day. Everyone of my favorite companies say "When it's done, it's done". You should be no different.
DeleteI Totally agree with what you said here I my self read manga and I usually get a new chapter every week and I am always really looking forward to it, and I believe it would be the same with a weekly update. But now that you have promised a daily update think you should do it at least until the next version of the game comes up and then settle on a day (Friday sounds good) that you will do a weekly update.
DeleteOh and by the way am really happy to be able to read about what in the code you are working on even if I am not so good at coding that I can help you it is nice to know why there has been a delay.
This seems like quite a reasonable suggestion
DeleteI would agree with you, but, there is one thing that makes me not.
DeleteIt is incredibly easy to make a post. It could even be a status update in the form of a list of things he has got done. And it is one thing to say it is too granular, but there will most likely be elaboration on his part to show what that means to us, the player. For example, those 5000 lines of code could mean that he is halfway through an integral part of the game's structure.
Ergo, I don't agree with your point at all.
I'm pretty sure he means he's going to be doing daily status updates until he's done with the new build because he couldn't finish it, not for the rest of the project.
DeleteH-Bomb, please don't do update posts every single day. On top of what others have pointed out, you'll only increase the pressure on yourself because you'll be giving everybody the chance to scrutinize (and more than likely criticize) every single day's worth of work.
DeleteDon't invent a cycle, do as many developers do.
ReplyDeleteJust put one post on top of blog with progress bars of each aspect of game (UI, animation, locations etc) and fill it every day until progress is complete.
Then you'll have a graphic image of what you have to do next and in which sequence; on the other hand we will be able to see this progress more clearly and you don't have to write long post with another excuse or something.
Dunno if there's such a feature on this blog engine.
Ya know H-B, All you have to do is ask us to help when your not sure what to do or when you can't finish something in time and we will more than gladly help you out. We're human, we make mistakes but we do (eventually) learn from them in the future and move forward
ReplyDeleteJust a tiny update to let you know the Halloween Update is still on track. I'm still juggling a lot of unknowns right now so I can't say exactly how many hours it'll be but it will definitely be up before I collapse tonight/tomorrow morning (maximum of 8 hours, but hopefully far fewer than that).
ReplyDeleteHe already explained why that wasn't possible. He shouldn't have used the word "definitely", but this promise of communication should be plenty to sate you.
DeleteI think it's time to show BS 5.3 for not patrons.
ReplyDeleteSo what we were promised on Halloween is going to come out on like the 15th? (realistically) Then what about the update for 15 November.
ReplyDeleteChances are they're probably getting put into one bigger release. S-Purple's on vacation, so Sprite updating's going to have to wait until they're back.
DeleteMornin H-B (Again) Well we've seen pictures of your desk so the reintegration issues don't have me gasping LOL ... Do you have a closer idea of how many major sub systems you have left iron out for a workable update, and when you expect to release (and don't forget to add a day or two for testing!)
ReplyDeleteHere are a few obvious tips you seem to need reminding of ....
1) Don't burn out! set reasonable hours, and walk away when you get to a good place to stop.
2) The only pressure you're under is what you set for yourself ... IE: Don't promise an update to the blog everyday, when you already promised to communicate much better and more frequently. The later was a well received apology, the former is trouble and trolls.
3) Spend a few bucks on a large free standing white board, and using the standard symbols, lay out the basic UI integration across the center, then circling it "cloud in" the major UI sub systems and finally connect the dots. This isn't a programming or PM trick. I just found it extremely useful to remind me at a glace what systems impact which other systems. (and buy lots of colors ... the board IS going to get crowded as you add new features.)
3 has saved my but several times at 2AM when I thought I was done with a system and looked up to find two or three other systems connected that I completely forgot about ... 2 seconds to underline the forgotten connections then off to bed knowing I wouldn't forget in the morning ... it really does help.
This still has to be fun for you or why bother ... We'll still be here tomorrow... screw the trolls. As far as today's update... All I want is an honest estimate of what you have left to complete before you can release and I'll be happy ... So have fun ;-)
...The reason why he has to keep continuing is that he has a Patreon, and because of this he has the obligation to continue this that he otherwise wouldn't have if he was working on this in his spare time.
DeleteI guess it is better you dont update everyday. LOL. Better focusing on what you do. A merely update on the progress maybe sufficient. If you cant make it this week, just say it out. For me, I am ok. But just a bit dislike when you said this week then dont have, then next week say next week again, then dont have. We will give you some time.
DeleteThat last bit pretty much summed up how i feel if you can't enjoy what you like to do then whats the point.
DeleteAs long as this project keeps being worked on I will be happy. I don't care how long it takes for updates to come as long as they do get here. Keep up the good work and don't get too stressed.
ReplyDeletehey man take it easy. at this rate you are going to burn yourself out. you dont need to post every day, or even work every day. take at least one day off a week and post like once or twice a week. it would probably be easiest if you set some kind of schedule like posts on monday and thursday and a day off on friday or something like that. Time management affects your personal life as much as your work life. Everyone here is pretty understanding of how stuff like that works. as far as everyone is really understanding of this kind of stuff. the ONLY mistake you have made thus far is the month of silence you gave us. The rest of it comes down to somewhat "expected" unexpected delays associated with any major project.
ReplyDeleteH-Bomb, please take your time. Do it at your own pace.
ReplyDeleteNot sure daily updates are necessary, especially if it comes down to update versus progress. That said, more than once as the end of a month nears would be helpful.
ReplyDeleteAlso, look up "Continuous Integration." This would have prevented the 'oops - when I put it together there were too many logic branches' scenario being a surprise at the last minute.
Not going to send a resume... but might at least send a note and see where it goes from there if it's really a PM you're looking for.
please make sure that every possibility of mating hast a scene
ReplyDeleteand i'm missing the overflowing cum by successful mating
The least you could do for those of us who have waited for a whole month with no updates and were still charged is post some more sprites. I mean, you're losing backers by the hour. Unless the update comes out fast as fuck, people are going to get thoroughly fed up.
ReplyDeleteCan't post sprites when the artist's on vacation in the US.
DeleteI'm pretty sure that the least he could do is nothing whatsoever? October saw the release of a progress dump and the Kay's Bottle Catch minigame, the month of November has barely started.
DeleteAs a side note, I'd be very interested to see some proof of this project "losing backers by the hour".
Extremely happy to see you posting status updates often, even when their are not good news. I'll wait patiently for updates as long as I know they are happening :)
ReplyDeleteThe Fox says:
ReplyDeleteI don't know why H-Bomb didn't just simplify the project and work solely on the core of the game; The UI, standard events, basic storylines, and only the standard monsters and animations. He could always have added the Patreon requested monsters and content later to an already fleshed out and playable system (like patches and exclusive content for a console or computer game).
Would have had a lot of placeholders to begin with, but he could have paced himself and just worked on the code for one piece at a time. this is alpha stage, so does H even have a beta tester or two to help him bug hunt before updates? He really should, since that would siphon off some of his responsibilities and give him more time to work on the code without stressing himself out every month.
I'm no code monkey, but I know how to organize a project, and H-Bomb is doing far too much work for just one person to handle month-to-month now that his project has grown to this size with this level of detail.
I have to sort of giggle at the people who threatened to cut funding. If they don't release anything then they don't get paid anything. That's the way Patreon works.
ReplyDeleteSo at least they're being honest and not trying to pull a "progress dump" WITHOUT anyone's consent to drum up extra cash while missing a deadline.
The progress dump was released Oct 1 so they did get paid for October. We did pay for a month of no content.
DeleteAnd the month before that?...
DeleteYou surely realize that the accounts don't add up regardless. H-Bomb's team has lost money no matter how you cut it.
Cool sounds like an interesting plan you got H-bomb.
ReplyDeleteYou should check out brothels.im for a pretty good model of how one can do a developer blog about an indie-developed, free, supporter-backed game. She's developing at a much slower pace -- and thus updates more slowly -- because she only does it in her spare time, but whenever she writes new content, adds new art, considers changing game mechanics, or does research on how to better achieve her goals in coding/game design, she writes a post about it and links to stuff when relevant, both to be open but also to receive feedback. She also writes about other stuff there, but you can just ignore that stuff haha.
ReplyDeletehbomb you seen to be having issues i would love to point out a lot of mistakes your currently making but most fo them are already pointed out though some are wrong you dont need a new progress manager you need 2 more scripters 1 more drawing person and a person to encourage you not force you
ReplyDeleteHartistaPipebomb Just want to give a tip, don't know if you are going to see this but maybe with some luck you will, i have instruction in programing and currently work with a very large database in a international retailer (so i'm not aplying, just trying to help) and i have two questions for you: What is the program that you use to code and is it the correct one for the things you need to do? Why do i ask you this, very simple you can't do a good job if you don't use the correct tools, if my analysis is correct the best way for you to code in the most efective way seeing the results that you want to obtain is to use a program that alows you to code in a object oriented way. And why do i say this, again it is simple, you want to make a game, that's the bottom line and with every update you have been giving us i have pick up a little bit of the way you work and how you want to do it and if you need to change assets frequently, need to test on the fly without compremising what you have just done or testing just a small part of your code, all that is already programing in a object oriented way but probably you are not using the best tool to program in that way, if you were you wouldn't been having some of the problems you have been stated. If waht i just said to you, you already know then the other tip i can give is that you try to hire someone else to help you with the code and you assume mainly the task of manager due to the simple fact that for the tipe of game it's turning and the audience it's getting you need to get someone on the coding department that is able to make thoose things faster than you, again this is all a big advise from someone that works on code and programing since they were fourteen (i'm currently 29), if you see that you can't deleiver the results you want then something is wrong and you need to try to find the best possible option to resolve the issue at hand. Don't try to do everything yourself!!!
ReplyDeleteOh forget to tell this, a good for the results you want is visual studio, it's expensive but it is worth it!!!
DeleteJust to somewhat echo what others have said; if you'd just post a blog update every week I'd be happy. If you start posting one every day, I'll be afraid for your mental health.
ReplyDeleteTry to keep these daily status updates short like twitter posts, or just copy and paste the ticked lines off your to do list
ReplyDeleteWow.
ReplyDeleteOctober 30th - Yeah, I'll have the new build out tomorrow night.
November 2nd - There are several large aspects of the game still missing... it will take a few days (I'm guessing about a week)
Sounds less like setting unrealistic expectations and more like: A) serious procrastination, or B) feeding us bullshit to keep us on board. Meanwhile, you get the white knights in the comments reinforcing this behavior and making excuses, and the trolls who never supported this game to begin with yelling "I told you so." None of this is acceptable. I'm out.
H-Bomb, now seeing what you actually need when you say "Program Manager" I feel like I'm unqualified (I don't know game development, just video production). However, I did send you a resume the other day if you were still interested in checking it out.
ReplyDeleteany chance of a candy book that you can buy from kay so feeding it to a monster will let you pick a new stat for it to learn like geyser fertile and so on it would need to be so once its used it vanishes like normal items
ReplyDeletenot stat as in stuff like char sta but the thing like geyser all night long and stuff
