Progress Update

Hey all, hope you had a good Thanksgiving! I just wanted to let you guys know that tomorrow's update build is going well. This will be the first playable version of the new build so I'm really excited to put it up. It's too early to say exactly how many of the new features will be in working shape, but the build is at least playable now so it's just a matter of how many more additional systems I can cram in there by tomorrow night. I'll continue to keep everyone updated!

  1. Any hope of a male breeder this build or is that still distant future biz?

    1. Male breeder might be in this build, depending on whether I can get to it, but if he is it'll have a pretty small effect on the game right now (he won't be able to get monsters pregnant yet, and I'm not positive yet whether I'll have time to implement his animations by tomorrow).

It's a little up-in-the-air: I have the build working finally, so right now I'm just kind of doing a mad dash to see how much content/how many of the features I can squeeze in by tomorrow night. Fair warning; there'll be bugs I'm sure, but I plan on hotfixing as many of them as quickly as I can.

    2. don't worry about the male breeder just make the game playable for now.

    1. Aquatic monsters is a definite "Yes, eventually". Not sure what the time frame for that is, but S designed the expanded ranch map so that there's an area for aquatic monster pens.

    2. Yay that is something i will look forward to. oh will you have to buy the game when you finish it or will it always be free?
      Thx for responding from L

    3. That's going to be awesome i'm hoping sooner or later we get to see the list of monsters that will be coming to the game.

    4. thus far the ones i know have been confirmed are...

Harpies, Seraphs, Catgirls, Cowgirl, Elves, Dickwolves, Demons, and Butt Stallions in thus far
Mandrakes, Aulrune/Dryads, Mermaids, Ogres and Fluffdragons have been stated that they will be in later
Mermaids and Alraunes are in as events

Kitsune (Foxgirls), Slimes, Arachne (spiders), Lamia (snakes), and whatever rabbits are called are all likely additions from a male perspective. im sure a girl or gay guy could flesh out other popular fetishes from their end.

oh and likely there will be gender swaps for everything, similar to how Elves are set up now. in fact, Mandrakes and Alraunes are supposed to be set up that way as well if memory serves. so as an example - Tomcats and Wolf Bitches

  4. It was reply to another comment, but with new update I edited it into list of things that I think H-bomb should
    consider.
(When I write longer posts in English I tend to not notice mistakes I make, so feel free to point them out.)

It's kinda long so most important thing is here:
    >>Imho before attempting to develop anything you should knew one golden rule - "fucking finish it". It's most
important thing ever, because if you don't finish it, all your progress and work will not matter.<<

Firstly I don't think that all that hate comes from missed deadlines. It's more about culmination of many mistakes.
    - First one is lack of creditability - H-Bomb lost it before and most people know by now that deadlines means
nothing when it comes to Breeding Season. I even stopped giving him benefit of doubt - I prefer to be pleasantly
    surprised than disappointed yet again.
    - I can be wrong but I think that H-bomb is (just like me) perfectionist. And it's well know fact these people are
terrible procrastinators - they keep polishing things, but can never bring themselves to finish them. It's very
hard thing to do, but they need to change how they work and first finish then polish not other way around.
    - Amount of money that BS receive monthly is pretty big (hell, it's more than my family make in A YEAR) so I think
that H-Bomb should make expenses public - to show roughly how much money going to Patreon, to team members, to
better equipment etc. It should calm some people (and make others mad about how much money goes where), so nobody
can comment about whole budget going for "hookers and drugs", just about H-bomb paying these things with his
    personal share ;)
    - Silent October shouldn't happened ever, especially when there was no promised update afterwards. It raise very
    uncomfortable questions.
    - I can be only one, but I think that in H-bomb case - not missing deadlines is more important than bugless release.
It's alpha - not missed deadlines, but bugs should be expected.
    - Project manager should make things better when she or he became part of team (I personally think that it should
be woman, eventually gay guy - that part of audience tends to be forgotten the most, so somebody who likes roughly
the same things should be part of team, 'cause now IIRC it's full of hetero men).
    - There should be some sort of list with these four categories:
    (1) things that will be in game 100% in (near) future, as some progress was made on them [male protag, neoteny etc.];
    (2) things that maybe will make to game, maybe not, but are cool enough to consider them;
    (3) other suggested things that can be considered if they're easy enough to implement/there's enough hype for them;
    (4) things that 100% will not be in game because reasons [not enough fans of this, too hard to implement, too much change to gameplay, team aren't comfortable with it etc.].
It should clear things up. (I personally don't see progress on things that are interesting to me so I prefer to know now
if there's chance that they eventually will be in game.)
People could post their suggestion under the list and it (hopefully) will stop them from asking under every post if x will be in game.

    1. yeah an explanation on how the money is spent will probably stop most of the whining

      Delete
    2. you guys will NEVER stop whining. No matter what H-Bomb does or doesn't do. It's your nature to whine.

      Delete
    3. i dont agree that 'everyone' complains and whines. i do agree things can be done better, but blech.

transparent expenses sounds fine, but do realize that theres going to be folks who dont agree with where the expenses go to, which opens up another mess. honestly i dont think it matters so much where the funds are used, so much as they are used well. which means instead of financial transparency, im more interested in results.

as to bugless releases... there arent bugless releases, there arent going to be bugless releases. what H-bomb seems to be aiming for is 'playable', which is a VERY different category. if its not a playable release, its not going to be received well by patrons.

second point on the playable releases - its a goalpost he has to hit anyway before he can progress - stacking more systems on an already buggy system thats unplayable (or borderline) is just bad coding practice. its like doing construction - you ALWAYS keep your construction site reasonably clean, or the building is very likely to turn out bad.

as to representation - i dont think anyone should be recruited predominantly on the basis of their gender, orientation, ethnicity, whatever. quota's are bad for business. having someone on the team to represent different viewpoints actually isnt needed. he just needs the advice about it - not the labor. its information he can get just as easily from listening to public opinion and asking the folks who are helping fund it. if there arent gay/trans/furry/girls/whatever funding this, i'll be very surprised :|

once he actually recruits assistance, later on in the development cycle, there will likely be someone on the PR end of things. in all honesty it will likely be the project manager who does at least some of the PR. but later on hopefully the game will have a dedicated forum or some sort where replies and information can be sorted (and requested) more easily than blogspot allows for

      Delete
  5. dude congrats on getting it functional again!

but please - i gave this advice before but this is a good spot to implement it

once you have the playable demo up, take a short break from coding. i used to code, im getting back into the swing of things, and i know how much stress you can build up working on stuff like this, especially under the conditions recently with the complete re-code decision.

take a break from coding. im not saying the project as a whole - focus on getting a team together, with at most a little bit of coding here and there. it will help more in the long run because you can take a breather, and then have help once you get started again.

your time is the currency for this, as the team leader. spending that time coding is well and good, but for better progress in the long run, you need to spend your time as an investment into future progress. IE getting the additional people hired.

yea, some folks might be pissed off that your taking a short break, but most folks will understand especially if you explain it to them. so for the sake of the project - take a break and get your team together lol

  6. Hey, H-Bomb, just want you to make sure you're not spending that money on crazy shit. The Government will be coming, so hang on to it or spend it on things you can write off. You should hire an accountant.

    1. I mean shit like blow and hookers, new cars, new homes, etc. Furry Porn Harvest Moon is the actual thing he's making money off of from Patreon, and while it does require expenses in the form of payment to whomever is being hired to work on it, as far as I know, there should be a fair bit left over. H-Bomb is still in his early twenties. Teenagers and Twenty-somethings (could basically anyone, really) have a notorious habit of being stupid when presented with (basically free) money. Like spending it all and then some without regards for consequences or thought of the future.

Just a passing concern of this anon. It's something to think about, anyway... Or dismiss.

      Delete
    2. Don't worry; an accountant was one of the first things I found once the project's popularity blew up :P. A good portion of the money I've received is stored away in a bank account waiting for me to reinvest it into the project. One of my first priorities was to ensure that even if our funding were to disappear suddenly next month I'll still have enough money left to take the project to completion (granted, with huge cuts to planned content, but I'd at least ensure it still ends up something that the people who've supported me can enjoy and consider completed). I'm not much of a crazy spender; I don't own a car, my rent's about $600/month, I usually only go out about once a week and I prefer bars on the cheaper side when I do. The only real big luxury purchases I make are board games and video games, and I honestly just don't have much time for video games these days. The biggest purchases I've made since we started getting Patreon money have been a Surface Pro III and a new Wacom tablet (I figured I could justify them since I use them for work, and they're indeed both excellent devices :P). Excess that I'm not storing away for later has mostly gone into taking a chunk out of my student loan debt.

Right now our team consists of myself, S, Fleet, Mittsies, Nono and PalmarianFire. Though myself, S, and Fleet are the only ones who work on this project full-time; Mittsies, Nono, and PalmarianFire dedicate a variable amount to the project each month. Virt also plans to help with the music once we get to that stage. We are also actively looking for another software engineer/project manager, but since my attention has been planted squarely on getting the build playable that hasn't moved forward very quickly.

A lot of people ask why we aren't just hiring more people to speed up the project, and the truth is that we've been learning the hard way that hiring on more people to a project-in-process doesn't speed it up at all; it actually slows the project down (at least in the near term). First of all, hiring is, itself, an involved process and requires a significant time dedication to make sure we have the best person for the job. I've just started reading "The Mythical Man-Month" to try to get a handle on what I lack in software project management experience (it's pretty dated these days, but it's a classic), and it's crazy how applicable I'm finding everything it's saying about common pitfalls in scheduling and coordinating these projects.

Lifted off of wikipedia: "Brooks discusses several causes of scheduling failures. The most enduring is his discussion of Brooks's law: Adding manpower to a late software project makes it later. A man-month is a concept of a unit of work proportional to the number of people working multiplied by the time that they work; Brooks's law says that this relation is a myth, and is hence the centerpiece of the book.

Complex programming projects cannot be perfectly partitioned into discrete tasks that can be worked on without communication between the workers and without establishing a set of complex interrelationships between tasks and the workers performing them.

Therefore, assigning more programmers to a project running behind schedule will make it even later. This is because the time required for the new programmers to learn about the project and the increased communication overhead will consume an ever increasing quantity of the calendar time available. When n people have to communicate among themselves, as n increases, their output decreases and when it becomes negative the project is delayed further with every person added."

Anyway, some time soon I want to take the time to make a more detailed blog post about this stuff, our finances, etc. Right now I really need to get back to finishing that update.

    3. h bomb will you have to pay for the game when its finished? from L

      Delete
    4. The game will always be free, though later on (well after the "release" version, and not likely until over a year from now) we might consider a special premium version with a few special extra monster variations, small cosmetic things, etc, for people who've donated in the past or want to buy it. It's not really something we can even slightly consider until the game is actually fully finished, though, which is by far my first priority.

    1. It's obviously not a scam. If it were a scam it'd be more telling and not have gone on for so long. H-Bomb has worked on this for quite a while, evidenced by his posts in the Legend of Krystal forum and this blog. He, and others, have produced various ideas and concepts into playable content. Overtime, it's gotten better. Slowly, but better.

I understand reasonable concerns, like unrealistic promises made; however, that doesn't equate to a scam. That's inexperience and probably ineptitude. That doesn't mean he's not trying nor does it mean he's not learning from mistakes made. He's just a kid--not a professional--who wants to make this hobby porn game his job, and if everyone did their research, they'd have understood that.

    2. Everything he said was true though and he didnt say that H wasnt at fault or making mistakes. He just said you expect too much. Honestly though i doubt you expect anything and just want to see this fall because its the popular opinion right now. Honestly the most "sheeple" thing i have seen is the haters who use the same 3 hate speeches over and over and over etc etc. By this point the "this is a scam" horse and the "the extended deadlines are done on purpose to earn more money" horse have been kicked so much by you and many others that they are probably more meat paste then horse at this point. We get it you are bored with nothing better to do then bash a porn game cause reasons. We get it you have a chip on your shoulder and simply cant handle anyone telling you that you are wrong. We get it you think that the people who are patreons are wasting money. You have made your point now you either need to move on or you sticking around to kick more is gonna start looking like you are a shallow sad person who needs to hate on something to somehow feel like you have some value in this world. I mean its too late for me i already think that about you, but hey maybe some people still see you as a person before they notice the shallow sad thing without any purpose that is the real you.

  12. So by playable it means Monsters can level, get pregnant, we get clients and we get 'taxed' + have the store and ALL current monsters in there ? ALL current monsters in game does NOT include all animations of course.

But yeah, by playable I think it should be possible to at least beat, save and load the game and not just another Monsterpen + some clients.

I hope this doesn't sound rude, because I really only want to know what to expect when you call it a playable version.

  14. You might also want to read Eric Ries's "The Lean Startup," which is about not just project management but effectively establishing the feedback/development/deployment loop so that you can be more responsive in the design. Fascinating stuff. And looking forward to the new playable build!

  15. Hmmmmm.... as a person with no experience in anything what-so-ever, I wanted to ask some things.

    1. If you need help and there are all these fans that are asking about when what (insert thing here) will be done, or why don't you just get/hire more people for (insert task here), have you considered asking fans with experience with the sort of things your team either has troubles or little time with to volunteer to help with smaller details?

    2. What does go into this kind of thing? (I'm half way through my first year to a Com-Sc Game Development Honors Degree, so I'm really curious).

    3. Doesn't the keep playing thing when you run out of money at the end of the month seem a little clunky? It seems to me that it really eliminates any challenge unless the person is playing it hardcore style and will insta-restart. It's just that winning is always open to the people who choose to keep playing anyway, and that's good and all but shouldn't there be a more viable penalty to not achieving a goal by the end of each in-game month? I just thought an interest system based on the loan you have (remaining / had to pay for the given month) to be added to the amount that is owed? Just a thought.

    4. Are there going to be dormant traits added to the game at any given point?

Sorry if I'm being a pain, I can't judge that kind of thing, but I have to admit I am curious.

    5. since you said you had a working build earlier and were just cramming more into it, have you considered in the future holding stable builds in escrow to release on schedule when the inevitable happens and you get a cascade of failure at the last minute that forces a delay?

    6. I do really have to improve my build system; I've had that process set up wonky from the start.

That said, I'm holding it back because I can get more things working with a couple more hours put into it, not because I don't have a version that can run. Admittedly because I'm so behind of where I thought I'd be I'm sort of perpetually in a state where I want to squeeze just a little more in.

I apologize, I know you guys have been more than patient with me, I'm just trying to get it to a state where it's actually enjoyable.
