Alpha Build 4.9 for Patrons

Whew, alright. That took longer than I wanted to. Alpha Build 4.9 will be going up on Patreon in about 20 minutes.

Additions
- Get ready to have a cow, since the new Holstauruses are here! Just the idle animation and variations for this update, but they're adorable and I'm pretty pleased with how they turned out.
- New animations: Futa Elf idle, Catgirl/Catgirl (still WIP), Catgirl/Male Elf, and Demon/Male Elf. If you watch the new Futa Elf idle and Demon/Male Elf animation for long enough you may see a neat surprise!
- New facial animation system: monsters can show a little more personality now, though we've yet to exploit it to its fullest yet.

Bug Fixes
- Skin color should inherit correctly for updated monster models, there still may be some weirdness with hair color or cross-species, though
- Small bits and bobs

Known Issues
- Some facial variations/expressions might not display consistently between some animations

Our goal is to have Stallions available by the 30th. With any luck I'll also be able to finish up the donation system and get around to all the little interface niggles that I haven't gotten to.

  4. Although I'm liking a lot of the new animations, it still seems like the dickwolf/catgirl is the best of them. Did you guys put a lot of extra polish into it? Am I just imagining it? I can't quite figure out what it is about it that makes me like it the best so far even after all these cool new ones. It just seems to be a bit smoother.

    First off I am proud of ya'll. You've been consistent and honestly, that is what any game development needs.

    The expression system is great. One feature I think you should implement in the animation is having them orgasm and continue after a few moments. It doesn't even need to feature a cumshot. Just the expressions and shaking of an orgasm to put it in the viewers mind that hey, they just came, thats hot. And then woah... they keep on going. Even hotter. Maybe a little bit of drippage or liquid running down a leg. Maybe even more advanced, you can let it run and the puddle under them continues to grow or something. I know, more layers. But you know what, I bet if you all stick around for a few years most of the extras would be implemented. Just don't stop pushing forward.

    I still feel strongly against the method of breeding and stats since it kinda bogs the game down for someone like me who well, just wants to watch things go at it in various loop variations and not have to go back and forth between screens just to have the game advance a day cycle.

    So firstly, congratulations on getting the new release out. It's really nice to see the new animations and Holstaurus designs. Although this is the shortest part of my post it is by no means the least sincere. Feel free to take a moment to bask in the warm glow before moving onwards. Maybe come back for the rest in a day or two if you're short on sleep.

    It's the time of year when the harpies are singing the dickwolves are howling and everything is getting it on with everything else and a young man's thoughts turn to just one thing...

    Maths. ( It's a curse.)

    If we're assuming that every race is getting an animation for sex with every other race ( plus male and female breeders and harvesting for both) then you're going to need n(n+4) animations, so the current seven races (counting elves twice) are going to require 70 animations.

    At the current rate of three per update thats approximately two years. That's fine, we knew it was going to be a long haul and I'm sure you can make efficiencies, reuse assets and hire new staff. But the problem is if you increase the number of races by 5 (Seraph, Fluffdragon, Mummy, Bunny-girl, Shoggoth) that's going to bring the total up to 12x16=192 animations or about two and a half times the work load.

    The real problem comes in with traits. Every new instance of a trait is effectively it's own race, so if we stick to our current seven races and limit futa and neoteni to females and feral to males, that's effectively 7+4+4+3=18 races or 396 animations or 11 years at the current rate. (I welcome corrrection if I've made a mistake with the maths.)

    So I guess my question is it feasible to scale up your animation workflow sufficiently to cope with these demands or would you need to consider cutting planned features to retain a manageable scope? Sorry if this has been a bit of a downer but setting realistic expectations sooner rather than later is probably best for everyone in the long run.

    2. I've been aware of the exponential growth of animations problem since the beginning. The honest truth is that I have never intended to make animations for every single possible pairing, there are just too many.

      That said, our capacity to produce animations will grow over time, as we'll accrue a larger and larger pool of reusable poses, and hopefully if this growth keeps up we'll continue to hire on more people to increase the rate of the whole process. We'll also be able to use some cookie-cutter set-ups in order to fill in the gaps where necessary, etc. At the very least we'll try to make as many animations as we can, and more importantly the animations that people really want to see.

    3. A second mistake, although it's really a technical one. I wouldn't have pointed it at all, because man I don't like feeling this pedantic, but you literally asked for it, so here goes.

      You're correct in that determining the total number of animations required is a counting problem, but claiming it is n(n+4) is assuming that it's ordered and with replacement. While it obvious is with replacement, since catgirl x catgirl is a thing, the list is unordered, as I assume that we can use demon x elf as the same as elf x demon, for instance. That makes the total number of animations (n + 1 choose 2) + 4n (for the extra ones you mentioned), or explicitly (n+1)!/[2! * (n-1)!] + 4n = (n^2 + n)/2 + 4n < n^2 + 4n whenever n < n^2 (which here it always will be).

      Your point is still well taken. That's still a whole boatload of animations that need to be done (56, for n=7, 126 for n=12), and it does increase as a polynomial in n, if one that you need to approximately divide by two. (Not quite an exponential, thankfully, or that'd be really awful.) Likewise, this is ignoring cases like with demon x elf where we have two different animations depending on pregnancy, although I'm guessing those cases especially a lot of the assets can get reused.

The next people you bring on could be solely animators to speed up to process as much as possible and then just create community/fan events to try and get the other stuff you need directly from the fans and hopefully for free. So have fan submitted sounds, story ideas, plot, and maybe even sprites (but that could make more work for you trying to blend it with your style). I'm thinking of fenoxo and how he lets people submit stories, shows them how they have to be setup and coded to work with the game and then just peruses the submissions and adds em in. If you could find a way to get a workflow like that up for some of the other things you need and then focus mostly on the animations, it could make things a lot easier.

  29. I hope this lays to rest the concern that everyone will be one body type. I like the fact that there is attention to variety in terms of expressions, styles, attitudes, body shapes, positions and even points of entry. This game has marvelous potential!

    I know some past comments have been ... contentious ... but it's worth pointing out that we are discussing an alpha version of a work in progress. In my own development work (sadly I'm on the admin side, so am more about uptime and security and deployment process than I am about art and animation or I might be more useful), I've seen the value of both the discussion and the dissension. Development is a task where we start not quite knowing exactly what we can do or what people want, and only through the back-and-forth of evaluation do we wind up getting something done that people want.

    All of which is to say that bug reports, UI issues, gameplay issues, art style evaluations, and questions about the project direction or milestones are all relevant and not to be either performed or perceived as personal attacks.

    I appreciate the cool-headedness of the comments on this post!

  30. I also want to cast my vote in favour of the cumshots/finishing moves, whenever they can be worked into the schedule. I like how you can tell from them that your breeding was successful, plus it's pretty hot.

    I also like how this game manages to include cuteness and hotness ... whether that's the sly sauciness of the idle (or active!) Kittengirl, the arched eyebrows and grin of a Harpy with a Catgirl, or the Holstaurus cradling her breasts ... this is what makes this game really stand out to me from other Flash animations. Anyone can do giant dicks and drenching squirts ... you guys manage to make everyone look like they're having a good time...

      I want that, too.
      I understand they're monsters, but instant birth takes some possible obstacles out of the way. Obstacles, btw, can add to the challenge. Maybe it would with a timed pregnancy?
      It would certainly make me feel more compassionately to them, and less like they're breeding machines. For now breeding machines are OK, but if we're eventually going to have marriage/relationships and whatnot I'd like them to be able to become gravid.

I mean i see what you are saying and it would add to the challenge, but at the same time they already have it worked into the history as to why they can breed so fast (because the goddess of chaos wanted to try to wreak havoc on mankind with tons of sex hungry super fast breeding monsters). If they change that, they will have to change the story around a little bit, not impossible but would take some tweakage.

    Marquis was actually pretty high (if not first) yesterday, then today there's a surplus of 200+ votes, and they all climbed in the same amount of votes Roxie did yesterday.

    It's usually not a good thing to hold polls like this, especially ones as easily rigged as the ones on blogger.

  43. An idea worth looking into later is to release the tools just for animation. This way people can create their own custom animations, possibly post and trade them among others. That way you can also get a variety of different animations and different qualities of work. Although this would be a multi-step process, since you'd have to create an ability for people to easily import animation into the game, since not everyone might know how to do it without some sort of UI helping them.

    You can also allow different animations of the same pairing randomizing, going in sequence, or selecting. Again, this would actually be a multi-stage venture, but could overall increase the quality of BreedingSeason. The catch is that the game would be more of pubic game, and slowly become a game less created by your team.

  44. Well, I think that just posting resources (like Holstaurus parts from previous post), tutorial and someplace for sharing animations could work well.
    That way fans could make some animations (various quality) and good ones could be implemented in game. Fans have something to do while waiting, and h-bomb have animations for free. It's win-win situation.

  45. Have you considered hosting "auditions" for certain parts of BS that need to be done?
    Image splitting, voice acting, dialogue/scene writing, animating, coding etc.
    I'm sure a lot of talented fans would be interested in helping out, even with menial tasks, if it meant reducing the amount of work the current team had to do (and thus ensuring quicker/bigger updates)

  49. In the old-style Butt Stallion vs. Kittengirl animation, the anus widens during entry ... in the new Catgirl vs. M Elf, the labia don't. Small detail, but it's your attention to detail that is part of the high quality of the game. Also ... might be interesting for the M Elf's eyes to widen during the Demon's entry. Just suggestions.

  50. Yet-another suggestion:

    Sub-traits [+] icon and Maximize button so you can see a full-view list while also being able to collapse and uncollapse sub-traits to thinks like consumable modifers and maybe one day add traits like futaballs for extra fertility although you'll likely get a lot of resistance towards that trait because people think testicles are more gay than dicks for some reason.

  56. I noticed a habit in the games animations. There seems to be an extreme lack of back views on your characters. If you could, it'd probably would help to set up future designs and animations with different angles to help with providing variety.

    Don't get me wrong, it's all great stuff, I just happen to be an ass man more than a breast man, therefore, I am just asking for you to at least take this selfish idea into consideration if you haven't already done so.

    Also I'd like to point out Catgirl's eyes during the CGxMelf animation; it looks absolutely hilarious!
    They sometimes get really wide it looks like she either discovered the meaning of life or forgot to turn off the stove at home XD.
    I know you've already mentioned that the expressions are only the beginning, Its more of me enjoying the bumps in the road you guys have to go through for your inevitable perfection of this game rather than a complaint.

    2. There is that too, I left it out since I know that this is a work in progress. Felf's expressions also seems to be lacking the "interaction" feel with the Dickwolf. I can't say it is easy of not since I'm not a programmer or coder, but I still find it kind of odd that the Catgirl expressions with another Catgirl or dickwolf seem to be so well done in comparison.

  57. haven't managed to find it if its still here somewhere... but the pregnancy indicator for the protagonist should probably be stuck back in the logbook thing. its really annoying when you save and come back later, to try and remember if she was pregnant or not.

    usually end up wasting a few days trying till she finally pops out a new creature, or i don't bother and two three weeks go by with nothing. starting to get into the habit of saving after pregnancy now, but still..

    also the animation could be updated quite easily i would think, i mean it doesn't move or anything. i know the belly during all the sex animations will be a challenge, but at least we could get a nice new picture when the 'hey your pregnant' screen pops up.

  58. Enjoyed the game a lot, played on Newgrounds (Alpha 4.2). TON of solid erotic writing - a little much for my tastes, but it's well written and easily skipped through if it's not your thing. Should consider a way to speed up the game a little bit though. I assume since this is Alpha, you intend to add more for the Research girl and the Saint, since they don't seem to be used at all right now. Seems like having the option to but dildos or do specific research and donating monsters is your intent, but hasn't been added yet. Would love to see more options there, and really love the game backstory given in that shop as to how the Saint fits in and what she did to create the Monster Breeding situation.

    Complaints - Main Breeding window is graphically cluttered. The 'chalkboard' feel is an interesting touch, but hard to navigate and view when you start getting a lot of monsters, even with the filters. There should be an easier way to view the stats on the monster card other than selecting them for one of the breeding windows (consider something like a hover-over 'window'); at minimum it should be a bit larger.

    Also, there should be a way to 'lock' a monster into one of the breeding slots, or at least a way to choose a monster for a particular breeding slot (gold or blue). I found that it was very annoying to select one partner using the fliter options for a particular type (like Harpy), then going to a different type (Dickwolf) and having to figure out which one I wanted to have the Harpy breed with, then having to go back and select the Harpy again.

    I'm finding that I end up naming the monsters based on their breeding bonuses and special abilities (for instance: DEX/Str -Stm Stronk2 for a monster that has a green + for Dex and a regular + for Str and a - for Stamina). You seem to be relying heavily on the player's interest in naming the monsters and remembering what each monster does/has in order to breed them, and that's just annoying. Player would have to use pen/paper to track it, and shouldn't have to.

    This is a tri-fold problem that something like a hover-over window to see the monster's stats before selecting or a 'lock' option after selecting a monster for one slot might help solve.

    There should to be upgrades to current habitats to allow them to house more monsters.

    It would be helpful if when the monster is selected to sell for a particular buyer that there's an options to see how much that monster is worth to the buyer before selling. That way, if you have multiple monsters who fit the criteria, you can decide which one will bring the most income, especially if your bill is coming due.

      Exponentially increasing the monthly tithe is a creative way to progress the game, but I think it gets to be a little excessive at about 3-4 months. It's certainly reachable, at that point, but if I'd played more, I have to wonder how likely I'd be able to reach future amounts. It came down to the wire one month where I had to have Elvin Slave Girls for Bronze and Gold (didn't have the Elf Hut yet), and the Silver buyer wanted a Catgirl with No Downsides AND Gentle (and some decent stats). I'm assuming you programmed in the ability for the game to detect these types of things so I was able to buy monsters with each of those traits and breed the Catgirl, but it was a VERY close thing, which I didn't think would get done (the randomness of getting both traits is a presumption, not sure if you programmed in the opportunity to get it based on the buyer goals, but if so, VERY GOOD job!). Once I got that Silver, I was able to quickly grab about 4 more Silvers afterwards to prep for the following month's tithe as well.

      Consider also potions that temporarily (1 day) add the Changeling trait to a Monster, allowing any offspring to be of any type for which the player has a habitat (once Changeling and 'Are you sure you're not adopted?' are unlocked). Also consider changing the Elf Juice to increasing the chance of a male or female offspring (based on gender of elf slave). I like the current Elf Juice effect, but they're the only monster that has a male & female option, so that's why I'd use them. (Don't just say increased chance of [Gender] offspring, say '70% chance offspring will be [Male]' to let the player know how much of a chance is given, unless you make it stat driven from the potion itself, but it doesn't look like that's the way you have it set up for other potions.) These two together would be extremely interesting.

      I love the fact that you added in the random encounters. You've got a good amount of them and different ones, and these really add to the flavor of the game and help break up any monotony.

      I know that you guys put a lot of work into the animations, but I'm finding that once I've seen an animation, I click through it, and even try to select combos that don't have animation yet so I can get back to gameplay. Maybe consider a way to turn animations (or a particular animation) off once the player has seen it.

    2. you can turn off animations in the selection window showing MxF. MxM, FxF, and so on. You can go back to it at anytime in the duration of the game by selecting the gear icon on the top left and choose options.

  60. I have just watched Harpy animation on S-Purple's tumblr, and, well, it looks great even without any smooth motions. Why don't you make your sex animations this way, so you can get rid of the problem of "humping rag dolls"? Correct me if I'm wrong somewhere, but such a decision will slightly increase the quality of animations as well, as it'll be easier to draw whole body muscles reactions and facial expressions.

    1. It would mean that for every animation S-Purpule must draw min. two poses for each participant. Now he just do one split image + additional small variations (like boob from different angle etc.).
      It will be too much work.

    2. I am drawing min two-four poses for each monster right now with the current animation method.

      Making all frames hand drawn would increase amount to 24 poses each monster.

  61. Socks on player's caracter? are U serious ? not sexy at all! (playerXdickwolf animation) ...and to many anthropomorphic beast (stalion and dickwolf are perfect before,U should keep them and make a weredickwolf/werestalion) it's just my advice ...

  64. Had another thought... Consider adding Ranch-hands with a Bunkhouse. Function would be either to diminish the times of all activities based on the number of ranch hands you have - but that's no fun! Alternately, to use Ranch Hand as if it were another monster in the breeding window, but they're human and they can be used to self-inflate monster stats (when you would otherwise mate with it) or Harvest from the Monster using the breeding screen (maybe a check box on the Ranch Hand card to indicate whether to mate or harvest?), but with either no time cost or a diminished one. Keep their Stamina low so that they aren't over-used.

    Just a thought.
